Studying About that Good Old Way
And how goes Awkward Social Interactions in Daughter's Chinese Workbook?
Well, let's take a look...
FATHER: What are you going to study in college?
DAUGHTER: I am going to study history. I like studying history and will like majoring in it.
FATHER: You are not capable of being good at studying history. You will not make money. You should study computer science. You will make money if you study computer science.

I have a History degree and my husband has one in Computer Science. Truer words have never, ever been spoken. I take solace in the fact that I can tell you the history of the french fry as I serve them to you.
I studied education and community studies in college. I did become a teacher. Had I to do over again I would have studied art, because at what point in our lives will we ever be able to focus all our energy on doing something we think is fun? College. No one, except my parents, has ever even asked to see my diploma and I'm quite certain I'd be doing what I'm doing now (childbirth education, blogging, and momming) with a degree that I would have enjoyed getting. And am still paying off!
It's like the Cranky Roman Family - Chinese version! What's funny is that as much as I love them, I didn't quite remember who they were. I had to Google to find it. Hmmm... I think you need a search widget on your blog.
I think Father could have been a bit more gentle, but Laura is correct and so is Father. Major in something lucrative, Daughter! Make money!
I'd like to record to reflect that that this was a conversation from your daughter's Chinese textbook and not from your daughter's living room. Just saying.
This conversation has been had on the last few Sunday dinners in this house, when the college kids, one of whom is graduating in a few days, come home to eat a hot meal and (oh who am I kidding) get their laundry done for free.
Oldest child is graduating (yay!) with a degree in accounting (yay yay!) but doesn't know what he wants to do with it (silence).
Can you just sense the student loan balances coming due right about now?
