All We Are is Dust in the Wind

I finally finished the Dust Bowl documentary, and went to make myself a cup of tea to drink while contemplating human's ability to endure privation and loss beyond all reckoning.

"Drat!" I thought, "We're out of the good jasmine."

And then my Midwestern ancestors wept in digust.

...at your shameful use of the cuss word "drat" I assume.

Because just last night I was looking for a "Relaxed Mind" teabag amongst the millions of others in my drawer ("Calm", "Kava Stress Relief", "Sleepytime", "Detox", "Smooth Move"....put them all together and they tell a story) and couldn't find it, and it was VERY FRUSTRATING!

Okay, perhaps not "1934 drought" frustrating - which, come to think of it, would have also adversely affected my tea-making - but still...

Too weak? I know.

I tried.

Dust Bowl doc ... got to the part where they killed all the rabbits and had to switch off. I'm a weenie, yes, but an honest one.

Every once in awhile, I reread Stud's Terkel's "Hard Times". It's an oral history of the Great Depression (that thing my parents and grandparents lived through and talked about almost incessantly while I was growing up) and what scares me most about it is that the "voices" in the book sound almost EXACTLY like the "voices" of my friends, neighbors and family. And me, sometimes.

What? Couldn't have made a cup of tea from yesterday's potato peelings and some nutella?

Naw, me neither. I would fail miserably if someone sneakily rewinded my personal space-time continuum and plunked me back in the Depression Era.

I get upset when the little paper square rips off and I can't get the bag out of my cup.

At least your ancestors had the good sense to exit the Dust Bowl for LA, where good jasmine tea is almost always available. Everyone wins.
